De første singelplatene kom på markedet i 1948, samtidig som plater i LP-format ble lansert. Det krevde nye typer platespillere og andre pickuper enn de stiftene og hastighetene de tradisjonelle 78-platene fordret. Det ble i 10-15 år produsert plater parallelt i begge formater. Det var imidlertid gjort forsøk med å skape singelplater allerede flere tiår tidligere, men det viste seg temmelig ugjørlig nettopp fordi grammofonene beregnet på 78-plater og et mye hardere materiale i platene. Datidens stifter ville rett og slett ripe seg tvers gjennom den plasten som ble brukt i singelplatene.
Standardformatet på grammofonsingel er 7 tommer (= 7") eller en diameter på 17,5 cm, og den skal spiller med hastigheten 45 omdreining per minutt (= rpm). De omtales derfor også som «45-plate». For å få plass til lengre opptak forekommer imidlertid singler som skulle avspilles på 33 1/3 rpm. På 1970-tallet ble det dessuten lansert 12 tommers maxi-singler, under påstand om at det ville gi bedre lydkvalitet.
