Young's first solo release since joining Crosby, Stills And Nash, After The Goldrush confirmed the singer's talent in the full glare of the public eye.
His most eclectic set to date encompassed the delicate wistfulness of 'I Believe In You' and 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart', as well as the electric anger of 'Southern Man', a raging tour de force that captured the special tension generated between Young and backing group Crazy Horse. Stills and Nils Lofgren also provided support on an album consolidating a talent while extending its range. The transformation of Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' from canter to ballad confirmed an original musical vision, but the album's continued strength is due to Young's own remarkable compositions.
